Why it pays to invest in assisted natural regeneration in Great Green Wall countries
Key messages
- Even with limited data, it is arguably economically attractive for smallholders to invest in farmer managed natural regeneration. As such, it is financially rational for governments, non-governmental organizations and donor agencies to allocate more funding to support it. Farmer managed natural regeneration offers more impact per dollar invested than other interventions with similar social, economic and environmental goals.
- The multiple benefits generated by farmer managed natural regeneration motivate smallholder land users across the Sahel to adopt this practice once they have witnessed the benefits for themselves.
- Increasing the number of on-farm trees and shrubs creates more complex and productive farming systems by integrating trees with crops and livestock. This contributes to increasing rural incomes and helps communities better adapt to climate change. Adopting the practice also creates a foundation for further intensification of farming systems.
