Silvopastoralism and Animal Welfare in Borana (SAWA) Project: Participatory Rangeland Management Plan (PRMP)

The Participatory Rangeland Management Plan (PRMP) was developed to support customary institutions, administrative authorities, and communities in Moyale and Miyo Districts of Borana zone, Ethiopia. Through extensive consultations with elders, women, youth, and rangeland councils, the plan consolidates community inputs into a practical framework for sustainable rangeland use.
The Bokola and Melbana rangeland units face severe challenges: land degradation from overgrazing and erosion, shrinking communal grazing lands due to farmland expansion and enclosures, bush encroachment, weakened customary institutions, inappropriate settlements, unclear land-use policies, and limited water access. Livestock welfare issues such as feed shortages, heat stress, and poor genetic conservation further exacerbate vulnerabilities.
The PRMP identifies priority interventions including improving water and pasture availability, promoting plant biodiversity, advancing silvopastoralism, and strengthening stakeholder coordination. It provides clear guidance on activities, timelines, and responsibilities, positioning itself as a critical asset for operationalizing sustainable rangeland management strategies.
