Impact of Climate Extremes on Agriculture and Land Use Dynamic over Vidarbha Region of Maharashtra
In India, agriculture is one of the major socio-economic activities of the country. Thus, any change or shift in its pattern will affect the overall economy. Extreme climate and climatic events like heat waves, drought have significantly impacted agriculture over the years, wherein the shift in one has a considerable impact on the other. The influence of climatic factors/parameters on an agricultural region can be studied effectively using the Land Use Land Cover (LULC) dynamics of that region as LULC maps are good indicators of long-term changes. Satellite imagery is the most effectively used source of data for LULC mapping. The ability of satellite sensors to provide images at varied spatial and temporal resolutions makes satellite imagery an important and reliable source for data and analysis related to LULC. This study focuses on LULC in Vidharbha and Marathwada regions, where the economy depends primarily on agriculture. Due to droughts, an alarming increase in the farmer suicide rates was reported due to crop failure, debts, and other reasons. We attempt Spatio-temporal LULC mapping in these regions over the last three decades (1985–2018) and address relationships with climate events using the Machine Learning platform, the Google Earth Engine (GEE).
