Forests and Food: Challenges and Opportunities

Forests contribute significantly to food and nutritional security in various ways. Trees and other wild plants directly provide food such as fruits, leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, and edible oils. Forests are also sources of wild vegetables and mushrooms (Min et al., 2024). Consequently, forests serve as crucial sources of micronutrients for many rural and smallholder communities (Sunderland et al., 2013), often making substantial contributions to household cash income. Tree-based foods act as a social safety net for rural households, helping them respond to shocks and filling gaps during seasonal shortfalls (Shackleton and Shackleton, 2004).
