Ethiopian Agroforestry Development Strategy (2026–2035). Transforming landscapes, livelihoods, and climate resilience in Ethiopia

Agriculture remains central to Ethiopia’s economy but faces challenges from land degradation, climate variability, declining soil fertility, and deforestation. Agroforestry, the deliberate integration of trees with crops and/or livestock, offers a scalable, cost-effective solution to restore landscapes, enhance productivity, diversify incomes, and strengthen resilience.
Recognizing this, Ethiopia has launched the National Agroforestry Development Strategy (NAFDS) 2026–2035, providing a coordinated framework to scale agroforestry across diverse agro-ecologies. The strategy aligns with Ethiopia’s Climate-Resilient Green Economy, Green Legacy Initiative, and Ten-Year Development Plan, as well as regional and global agendas including AFR100, the SDGs, UNFCCC, and UNCCD.
