Editorial: Indonesian mangrove ecology and the changing climate

Mangroves are critical ecosystems for climate change mitigation and adaptation, yet knowledge gaps remain in Indonesia, which hosts vast mangrove diversity across complex hydro-geomorphic settings. This Research Topic aimed to assess the breadth and depth of mangrove research in Indonesia, focusing on vegetation structure, sediment characteristics, carbon stocks, greenhouse gas inventories, and distribution mapping. While contributions extended beyond Indonesia, the initiative sought to identify challenges and opportunities for blue carbon ecosystems, particularly regarding resilience to sea-level rise. Although initial objectives were not fully met, the review highlighted important trends: uneven coverage of mangrove research, gaps in long-term monitoring, and the need to integrate ecological findings with policy discourses. These insights can guide future research agendas and strengthen evidence-based policymaking for climate mitigation and adaptation.
