CIFOR-ICRAF Annual Report 2024 – In the spotlight: Presenting CIFOR-ICRAF’s ongoing commitment to resilient tree, forest, and agroforestry landscapes

In 2024 – the hottest year on record – the world once again faced the alarming realities of a planet whose climate, biodiversity and food systems are under siege. Yet hope emerged through progress at three UN summits, where CIFOR-ICRAF championed trees and forests as critical to addressing global crises.
On the ground, we continued to drive impact across tree and forest landscapes through our presence in 25 countries, with over 860 staff and 370 partners. The fast-growing Global Landscapes Forum catalysed action for sustainable landscapes worldwide, and Resilient Landscapes continued to leverage our science to spur large-scale impact investment in nature-based solutions.
Based on cumulative results from diverse projects across Africa, Asia, and Latin America, CIFOR-ICRAF has supported the protection and improved management 139 million hectares of forest and non-forest land; the mitigation (via avoidance or removal) of 80.5 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent of greenhouse gases; the restoration of 2.5 million hectares of degraded land; the protection, restoration or sustainable use of 130 million hectares of biodiversity-important habitat; and enhanced livelihoods for 4.2 million people (50% women). In 2024 alone, we directly trained 253,000 people – 48% of whom were women.
This report features our achievements in revitalizing landscapes, building climate resilience, reimagining food systems, and facilitating equitable action – with highlights from our state-of-the-art laboratories.
