PATSPO Newsletter August 2024

The PATSPO Newsletter: Issue 12 highlights major achievements of the Provision of Adequate Tree Seed Portfolio in Ethiopia (PATSPO II) project during 2024, with a particular focus on the establishment of eight new Seedling Seed Orchards (SSOs) across multiple regions of Ethiopia. These include the project’s first tree seed orchard in the Somali Region and additional orchards for species such as Tamarindus indica, Boswellia papyrifera, Eucalyptus saligna, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Acacia decurrens and Faidherbia albida. The newsletter reports that the project and its partners have established a total of 53 breeding and seedling seed orchards in five regions, strengthening future supplies of quality tree seed for restoration and tree planting initiatives. It also covers a study tour to Denmark that exposed project staff to advanced tree-seed technologies and nursery practices, as well as discussions from the biannual Steering Committee meeting on project progress, stakeholder collaboration and sustainability planning. Overall, the publication demonstrates ongoing efforts to improve tree seed systems, support forest landscape restoration, and build institutional capacity in Ethiopia.
