Introduction to the concepts of agroforestry

This paper serves both as an introduction to the main concepts of agroforestry (it has been used as supporting notes to an introductory lecture at the ICRAF training course on ‘Agroforestry research for development’) and as a cross reference document between English and French terminology, since it is bilingual. The 11 sections under which the discussion is presented are: definition; multipurpose trees; main advantages of agroforestry; sustainability; multidisciplinarity; the systems approach; agroforestry systems; agroforestry terminology; structural analysis of agroforestry systems; functional analysis of agroforestry systems; and main agroforestry technologies.
