Decentralization of improved rubber planting material production in Nigeria

Decentralization of improved rubber planting material production at community level, initiated by a Rubber Agroforestry Project sponsored by the Common Fund for Commodities (CFC), has promoted the expansion of rubber plantations in Nigeria. In addition, it has reduced unemployment and increased the acreage under rubber in five participating states. Fifty per cent of the participating farmers across the five states in Nigeria acquired both technical and management skills in nursery operations and development. Thus, decentralization of improved rubber planting material production at community level should be promoted as an improved and viable option of enhancing plantation establishment by smallholder rubber farmers.
