Community Biocarbon Projects in West Africa: Challenges and Lessons learned

The purpose of this report to provide a current inventory of West African community biocarbon projects, and to document challenges encountered and lessons learned from a selection of case studies of established projects. In order to achieve these goals, this report focuses on: (i) Projects that include local communities as intended beneficiaries and involves them, to some degree, in project development and implementation; (ii) Projects which have been designed and implemented within the last ten years (2006 to 2016). To analyse specific experiences and challenges faced by community biocarbon projects, we selected case studies from West African biocarbon projects registered under a voluntary carbon market standard1. These projects were selected as the project design documents and third party validation and verification reports available provided a method for accessing information relating to project design and challenges encountered during implementation. The report structure is as follows. Section 1 introduces the concepts of biocarbon, climate change mitigation and results-based finance. Section 2 describes the methodology used in compiling this report, by describing: i) How case studies were selected; and ii) The processes used to review case studies. The results of the case study review are described in Section 3. Finally, Section 4 summarises key conclusions that can be drawn from the case studies. A list of all biocarbon projects considered as case studies for the report is provided in Annex 1.
